At the 2017 Summer Conference in Newport, RI, the Fiberglass Material Council heard updates about revisions made to a profiles specification as well as 2017 versions of the popular fiberglass finishes standards suite. Additionally, the material council will be teaming up with the Aluminum Material Council to work toward creating a compliance guidance document pertaining to a different series of finishes standards. Work on these matters and more will continue this October at the Fall Conference in Greenville, SC.

Updated Profiles Spec Now Under Product Group Review

The FMC 305 Fiberglass Profiles Specification Review Task Group (Chair: Robert Plagemann [Tecton]) reviewed substantive comments received from the recent task group ballot of Draft #3 of the update to AAMA 305, Voluntary Specification for Fiber Reinforced Thermoset Profiles. After finding the comments non-persuasive, the draft was issued for ballot to the product groups on July 18. Responses were due by August 23.

An important feature of the 305 revision is the introduction of two different product types for profile categorization. Both of the proposed Types I and II have the same performance parameters, although acceptance criteria differ in Type II (polyurethane) in terms of flexural strength, flexural modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion and heat deflection temperature.

Finishes Standards Reballoted; Shift Emphasis to Quality Control

2017 versions of the fiberglass finishes standards suite, AAMA 623, 624 and 625, although successfully balloted to the AAMA Finishes Steering Committee (chair: Robert Plagemann [Tecton]), were found to still contain references to “Hunter” color space which were to have been omitted. To correct the oversight, the documents were revised with the references deleted and re-balloted to the product groups on July 24. The ballot responses, due by August 28, are expected to result in final approval.

In a related move, a joint task group was formed with the Aluminum Materials Council to develop a guidance document for in-process quality control for compliance to AAMA 2603, 2604, 2605, 611, 612, 623, 624, and 625 finishes standards. Interested members are encouraged to participate. The joint task group’s name is AMC/FMC In Process Finish Applicator Quality Control Task Group.
